Blood Counts

Index

Introduction

Since chemotherapy affects the production of blood cells, it is important to check the amount of various kinds of cells in the blood.

In my case, I got a blood count on a weekly basis. I received chemotherapy every two weeks. My blood counts were taken
  • before each chemotherapy treatment, and
  • a week after treatment.

Blood Count Information

  • WBC - White Blood Cell count - measures the concentration of white blood cells in blood. These cells help fight infection. The normal range for this count is : 4.8 - 10.8 x 109/L (4,800,000,000 to 10,800,000,000 cells per liter).

"Differential counts" subclassifies each component of the white cell population. The normal ranges of these counts are:

    • Neutrophil 2.0 - 7.5 x 109/L (45-65%)
    • Lymphocyte 1.0 - 4.0 x 109/L (20-40%)
    • Monocyte 0.1 - 1.2 x 109/L (4-8%)
    • Eosinophil 0.0 - 0.4 x 109/L (1-3%)

    Lymphocytes can be subclassified into:

    • B cell 5-25%
    • T cell 60-90%
    • Suppressor 10-40%
    • Helper 30-65%

  • RBC - Red Blood Cell count - measures the concentration of red blood cells in blood. These cells carry oxygen to the body. The normal range for this count is 4.1 - 6.1 x 1012/L.

  • Hgb - Hemoglobin concentration - measures the concentration of hemoglobin. This is what "carries" the oxygen in the red blood cells. The normal range for this count is 12 - 18 g/dL (grams per deciliter).

  • Hct - Hematocrit - Measures the relative amounts of corpuscles (cells) and plasma (water and various dissolved constituents) in blood. The result indicates the ratio of the volume of packed red blood cells to the volume of whole blood and is expressed as a percentage. The normal range for this count is 37 - 52 percent.

  • Plt - Platelet Count - measures the concentration of platelets in blood. These cells help your blood clot. The normal range for this count is 130 - 400 x 109/L.
